Treasure what’s Old

Today is the first day of University, and here I am, sitting at home behind my iPad, safely ensconsed in  a large black chair as I type this. It’s funny seeing people so excited to embark on a new year filled with  the ups and downs of University life, when after a few weeks, they will no longer be feeling this zest. Instead, they will have been swallowed by the monotonous routine that the University timetable demands: a practical every two weeks, a one-hour lecture every day, a tutorial every week or so. So why is the first day the most anticipated if it just marks the beginning of the monotony yet to follow? It’s because we are awaiting the unexpected, and are excited by the prospect of something new.

Perceived beauty and Physical attractiveness

Walking home from the Victorian Skin and Laser Clinic the other day, I reflected on the conversation I had with my beauty therapist. Mai told me I had lovely skin, the kind that was ‘flawless’ and ‘pimple-free’. Lovingly she’d caressed my face, before ruthlessly waxing off the hot viscous sweet-smelling liquid from under my eyebrows.

“You know, we could use your face for a couple of photo-shoots if you’d like.” Speechless, I lay on the upright bed as she continued to lather yet another layer of hot oil under my brow again.
